Mercurial gets its title from both the raw material used in its creation and the nature of its musical discourse. Like its elemental namesake, the piece’s sound world is a continuum between metal and water sources, with various processes fusing and mediating between each. The piece’s discourse is also distinctly ‘mercurial’ in that highly complex and dynamic sonic structures coalesce from the interaction of individual sounds. The result is a phantasmic exploration of the sonic potential held within the source materials.
