Crystalline Vapor

The clarinet’s unique timbre – from crystalline clarity to warm airiness – provides the musical and sonic basis of this work, in addition to the title. Timbral and melodic gestures presented in the live part are expanded and extended in the electronics. This blurs the line between the human and electronic performers, creating a aural fantasia on the sound of the clarinet itself. Crystalline Vapor was composed for clarinetist Rachel Yoder, who also graciously provided the samples used in its production.
